Brandy is essentially a spirit made by distilling wine. Generally containing between 35% to 60% alcohol by volume, brandies are popular as after-dinner drinks. There are different types of brandies available: grape, pomace, and fruit. Where not mentioned, the default type is grape. It got its name from the Dutch word brandewijn. When translated, this is a term for wine that is burnt in a distillation process that lets alcohol evaporate and condense into liquid as it cools.

To make brandy, the distillation process is very important, keeping in mind that the slower and gentler method is more effective in letting out the aromatic elements of the raw materials in the wine. Think of it like stewing fruit: with lower flames, more intense aromas are let out and better residue drainage is achieved. Those from Cognac often describe the distillation process for the brandy drink to be similar to evaporation speeded up.

Like many spirits, best brandy is aged. Taste some that just been distilled and they will taste unappetizing, oily, and raw. How brandies taste in the end though depends on how long they were stored in oak casks. Why oak is used in the standard casks is actually a matter of coincidence–oak was the most abundant tree around that the original distillers could use for casks. But aside from proximity, oak also has properties that work well with wines and other grape products (brandies are made from wines that are then made from grapes) so the coincidence proved to be most beneficial. There are different types of oaks so different types of brandies achieve different kinds of flavors so signatures depend mostly on local traditions.

Did you know?

Spain produces the most amount of brandy than any other country in Europe. And from whatever Spain produces, about 95% come from the Andaluca area in the south, particularly Jerez de la Frontera.

After a hearty dinner, it is customary on formal occasions that the best brandy the host has is served to guests. It is around this moment that the palette rests from all the gastronomic explosions that dinner gave. It is around this moment that people start to converse and socialize, giving them an opportunity to make new acquaintances. However, in this modern day and age where parties are not held in dining tables with conversations but in wide open floors with grinding and dancing, brandy has been mixed into different cocktail drinks so that the younger generation would be able to enjoy the fruity flavors with a twist.

A typical brandy drink is served in small amounts in a brandy snifter, which is a type of glass shaped like a fish bowl with a stem that widens at the bottom that acts as a standee. Brandy is typically made from grapes, but certain innovations in creating new flavors allowed new types to arise, such as applejack from hard cider, German schnapps, and even Tuica, which is a mixture of different fruits from Romania.

Brandy is traditionally drank as an after-dinner drink, but with the innovations of different bartenders who wish to create new drinks, this drink also known as burnt wine has been the base alcohol for many different cocktail drinks that range from simple drinks such as a Brandy Sour and Angels Kiss to the ominous Passport to Hell.

Whether mixed in with lemon juice to create a glass of brandy sour or poured in a goblet to take it on the rocks, brandy is one important drink that has been fermenting in oak barrels all around the world. The only question remaining is what bartenders and bandy connoisseurs will think of next for this tasteful and timeless beverage.

Did you know that you can get very creative with Brandy? There is a vast amount of best brandy recipes that you can try. Below is a Brandy Lemon Sumptuous Cake recipe. It is a sumptuous, mouth-watering cake that is perfect for special occasions. Slice through the goodness of this unique recipe, and bring the taste of brandy drink into a different level. For this recipe, you will need two sets if ingredients, one for the brandy sauce which you will dab on the cake after it bakes, and one for the cake itself.

For the cake, you will need: 4 medium sized eggs, cup granulated sugar, 1 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, teaspoon salt, half a stick of butter, cup of finely chopped cashew nuts, and cup of finely chopped walnuts, teaspoon of cinnamon powder

For the brandy mix, you will need: 2 cups of sugar, cup lemon (squeezed), 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, and 1 cup of melted butter, cup brandy

For the cake mix, beat eggs in a bowl and add the sugar. Beat well, until both ingredients are finely mixed together. You may use an electric mixer. Add the flour into the mix, and keep beating until the batter is evenly mixed. Add the baking powder, salt, cashew, walnuts, and cinnamon into the batter. Keep mixing the batter and until all ingredients are mixed proportionately. Finally, add the half stick of melted butter, and continue mixing until the butter is even. Once done, pour this mix into a cake bowl with a hole in the middle. Bake this for 40 minutes in an oven pre-heated to 350 degrees.

While the cake is baking, you can do the brandy mix. In a casserole, heat the melted butter to just below boiling point, and add the 2 cups of sugar. Mix this until the sugar is melted. Add the maple syrup and the lemon. Add the brandy and keep mixing. make sure that the brandy mix is constantly hot.

You will know when the cake is done baking if you stick a toothpick in the cake; when batter still sticks to the toothpick when you pull it out, it you have to wait a few more minutes before taking it out. When the cake is done, you can let it set on a table. Using a toothpick, make holes on the cake. Make them about 5 millimeters in distance from each other; this will help your brandy mix seep in better into the cake.

Using a brush, dab the brandy mix onto the cake gently. Be sure to dab on all surface of the cake until all the brandy mix is consumed. You might ask why you need to dab instead of pouring the mix onto the cake. Well, pouring the mix will leave uneven portions of the cake tasteless, while some portions intoxicating. You want to spread the brandy mix evenly to maintain taste consistency.

You may refrigerate the Brandy Lemon Sumptuous Cake, and serve for dinner. Slice into the cake and experience the wonderful smell of butter and brandy with a mixture of cinnamon. Bite and experience the taste of cashew and walnuts wrapped in a sweet, addictive package. The Brandy Lemon Sumptuous Cake is really something to enjoy.

Brandy is one of the popular spirits enjoyed by many. Typically served as an after-dinner drink, it contains about 35% to 60% alcohol by volume. Traditionally aged in oak casks, this spirit is produced by distilling wine. The distillation process is delicate, done slowly so as to let the flavors emerge thoroughly. Brandies get their color from being stored in oak casks. Those aged in earthenware or paraffin-lined casks don’t get this distinct color so caramel solutions are added to darken the batch.

Brandy lends a certain kind of image to its drinkers. As it is delicately produced, so is the process of savoring this spirit. Warmed by hand before taken, a brandy drink requires a certain level of poise and classiness. The drink is usually taken warm but it can also be enjoyed chilled, sipped from a snifter. The warmed variety will have a more pungent taste and the chilled becomes smoother and thicker, featuring a less distinct burn on the throat. Different brandies will take on different flavors so try different until you find what suits you.

The best brandy will depend really on your personal preferences. However, the kind of brandy that Jerez de la Frontera in Andaluca, Spain produces is the kind you hear on a lot of people’s lips. What sets apart brandies from Jerez de la Frontera is that they make use of the solera system in the aging process. In the solera system, fresh, new brandies combine with older brandies, creating a unique aging process with the aim of putting together the best qualities of different kinds of brandies. Jerez de la Frontera is just one of the many towns in Andaluca producing brandies. And Andaluca produces about 95% of the total production of Spain. Spain has the distinction of producing the most brandies than any other country in Europe.

Brandy is best enjoyed neat, without anything. No ice. Not mixed. Just plain. This will allow you to take in all its flavors and truly experience what brandies are renowned in the world for. Warmed by touch, brandies are on the pungent side. If chilled, they develop a smoother, thicker, and milder feel.

But this isn’t to say that brandies cannot be enjoyed as cocktails. As base ingredients, brandies go well with a lot of flavors so it complements a lot of other ingredients. Enjoyed by both men and women, there are a lot of cocktails you can whip up with brandies. These include the Apple Fizz, Sidecar, Metropolitan Cocktail, Alexander Cocktail, Cocktail Manhattan, Stinger, Bulls Milk, The Rolls Royce, The International, and the American Beauty. Ingredients for these cocktails are easy to come up with, typically found in a regular bar setup. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you can also design your own brandy drink. Alcohol in the kitchen? Brandy is also excellent for cooking.

There are different brandies you can use for different cocktails. One of the most popular though is from Jerez de la Frontera in Andaluca, Spain. With the help of a unique method called the solera system, new brandies are added to older barrels while aging is incomplete. The result is considered to be the best brandy, sweeter than others produced with other grape varieties.

There will always be a proper way to enjoy brandy. However, don’t let this stop you from really, truly making a connection with brandies. Experiment. Understand how this spirit is treated properly first and then use what you’ve learned to augment what you already known about brandies. You don’t have to convince anyone either. For as long as you appreciate brandies in your own way, you would have contributed greatly to the overall appreciation for the drink.

Unless you are an alcoholic, you, just like the rest of the world, drink alcohol during the most memorable occasions in your life. You drink to celebrate when you are happy. You drink to drown out the sorrow when you are sad. You drink to meet other people. You drink. The bottom line here is that drinking alcohol is an age old tradition. It has become part of countless cultures all over the world.

However, part of that tradition as well is the age-old battle that could never be answered by those who drink. Indeed, the battle between whiskey and brandy comparing their similarities, differences and which one is better has been discussed by many people since time immemorial.

To begin with, the two are made from two entirely different ingredients. Brandy is made from fruits, while whiskey is made from grains. An ordinary brandy drink is pretty much like wine, except that wine has more water content, thus making brandies have higher alcohol content as compared to wines. Whiskey, on the other hand is made from fermenting mashed corn, as well as other grains like, wheat, barley, rye and even rice.

The similarities are based solely on their color, which is what they get after being fermented in oak barrels that have been used over time and have been charred by flame. This is also the main reason why some of the best brandy in the world is called burnt wine because essentially, that is what it is. Overall, the brandy vs. whiskey battle does not really matter since it all boils down to a matter of taste. These beverages are not made from the same ingredients so it is futile to compare the taste of the two. Although it can be fairly concluded that both are revered for their great taste as an after dinner drink.

Scotch and brandy are two different things altogether. For starters, scotch whiskeys are made from grains, while brandies are made from wines, which are made from grapes. Some people like whiskeys better. Some prefer their brandies. And a whole other group of people don’t want to touch either. There’s really no way to tell which one is better since it’s a matter of personal taste. But before you go ahead and dive into the battle between whiskeys and brandies, it’s important to learn the proper way of drinking both.

With brandies, it’s important to let your drink warm up so that flavors open up and are released. Best poured into a snifter, a bowl-shaped glass, brandy is taken sip by sip. Warm brandy is thin and is on the side of being pungent. Brandies may also be chilled instead of warmed, though warming is the more typical way of enjoying them. When chilled, brandies are thicker, smoother and don’t burn as much as the warm kind.

For whiskies, think of the expression “a spider’s ass”. It’s not smooth and classy as brandy but that is the best, yet crude, way to describe how much Scotch whiskey should be in your mouth. With whiskeys, you don’t sip. It’s just not possible to take a sip anyway because you’re supposed to have an amount so small in your mouth it would resemble a spider’s ass. And when you’ve got that spider’s ass of an amount in your mouth, you don’t swallow. The amount of whiskey you have should just be enough to mix in with your saliva. A general rule of thumb is that you should still be able to talk after taking whiskey. You also can’t add ice into a glass because that would dilute it, an utter disrespect to the flavors it holds. For those who want to add a bit of water, a few drops will do. Anything more than that will ruin your glass of whiskey.

If you’re going to be taking on whiskey and a brandy drink side-by-side, you won’t finish the same number of bottles at the same time due to the manner of how they should be properly enjoyed. A 1.5-ounce of whiskey is equivalent to several snifters of the best brandy. If you’re new to these spirits, start light. The stronger whiskeys and brandies have been known to overwhelm beginners.
